ALWAYS HAVE YOUR HAND OUT TO GIVE
Darrell
Griffith felt an immediate connection with the Paducah Rotary Club
since they both believe in generosity to their communities. Griffith,
also known as Mr. Dunkerstein for his outstanding records at U of
L and the Utah Jazz, said nothing is more important than an outstretched
hand to help those who have helped guide us.
He cited his teachers and family as important influences on his
character. They gave him their time, which is a priceless gift.
In turn, Griffith is giving his time to help with projects such
as a Christmas program in Louisville that transports homeless from
shelters to a cafeteria where they are fed by the youth of his church.
"This not only helps the homeless but also helps the youth have
an understanding of giving. It teaches children to give back."
"The mentality of children when I was growing up and now are worlds
apart." When he was young his X-Box was a makeshift aluminum board.
Play activities usually took place outside or in gym class. There
were no vending machines and lunches were green beans, carrots,
milk and food prepared from scratch. "This generation is spoiled."
Griffith also believes that opportunities are all around us in the
U.S. "We have no reason to complain."
A trip to Bangladesh opened his eyes to the poverty there. "We were
advised not to give to the children who were asking for money but
I felt I had to do it. They came out of the woodwork begging for
a nickel, quarter or anything we could give." That experience made
him think about what we have in the U.S. and the opportunities we
take for granted.
Griffith is currently the Special Assistant to UK President James
Ramsey. He also is part of the Capital Campaign team for the university
and is involved in outreach for the school.
During the Q and A time he advised parents to let kids decide what
they want to do so they won't get burned out from taking on too
many activities.

next Thursday's Power in Partnership breakfast. Elaine Chao

Phyllis needs volunteers to distribute and put labels on the

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK PHIL JUSTICE
 |
What do
the Hatfield and McCoys and Phil Justice have in common? They
are all from Pikeville. As a matter of fact, Phil's mother is
a member of the Hatfield family.
Phil
moved from that part of the state when left for college to pursue
a degree in health services. He spent most of his career in
sales in Indiana until 2003 when he moved to Paducah. He is
currently the regional director of development for the Sunrise
Children's Services. Phil is the father of two sons and grandfather
of four granddaughters. He enjoys traveling and reading and,
of course, attending Rotary.
